Participation
Between Round 20 and Round 21, the number of unique hospitals that submitted cost data to the NHCDC increased from 343 to 451.
The increase was driven mostly by Queensland and Tasmania, which provided data for an additional 84 and 18 hospitals respectively.
For Queensland, the increase translated to 82 additional facilities submitting cost data for services linked to mental health and to emergency department presentations. For Tasmania, the change related mostly to an increase in the number of facilities that provided cost data for sub-acute and non-acute services.
The Appendix Tables present detailed results from the collection by activity stream and jurisdiction.

NHCDC Independent Financial Review, Round 21 (Financial year 2016-17)
The National Hospital Cost Data Collection (NHCDC) is the primary data collection that the IHPA relies on to calculate the National Efficient Price used for the funding of public hospital services. To ensure that the quality of NHCDC data is robust and fit-for-purpose, IHPA commissions an independent financial review to assess whether all participating hospitals have included appropriate costs and patient activity.
This Round 21 IFR Report provides an overall summary and findings by jurisdiction and for each participating site. It also outlines recommendations for IHPA and the jurisdictions to consider in future rounds of the IFR, with the aim of improving the consistency and transparency of NHCDC submissions.
This Round 21 IFR Supplementary Report provides the detailed data tables for participating hospitals/health services and other supporting information.
