ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS Thirteenth Edition

ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS Thirteenth Edition supersedes ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS Twelfth Edition and is applicable for separations from 1 July 2025.
ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS is used for classifying admitted patient care and comprises the following:
- International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision, Australian Modification (ICD-10-AM) – used to classify diseases, injuries and related health problems
- Australian Classification of Health Interventions (ACHI) – used to classify surgeries, therapies and health interventions
- Australian Coding Standards (ACS) – guidelines for nationally consistent application of ICD-10-AM and ACHI.
ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS Thirteenth Edition is used in conjunction with National Coding Advice and the Clinical Coding Practice Framework and has been developed in accordance with the Governance Framework for the Development of the Admitted Care Classifications.
IHACPA has sought relevant input from clinicians, jurisdictions and other health sector stakeholders represented on its technical and advisory committees in its development.
Some of the key changes for Thirteenth Edition include:
- Formatting and layout of the ACS
ACS Thirteenth Edition features a standard template, clear Directives, Examples with rationales explaining code assignment and cross references to related ACS. - Introduction of cluster coding
Cluster coding is a mechanism of linking related diagnosis codes through use of a diagnosis cluster identifier (DCID) that enhances the value of coded data. - Complications of surgical and medical care
Improvements have been made to ICD-10-AM Tabular List and Alphabetic Index and the ACS to reduce the ambiguity related to coding complications. - New codes for social and cultural determinants of health; organ, tissue and cell procurement and transplantation; vaping and voluntary assisted dying.
ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS Thirteenth Edition material will be available in a staged release from March 2025. Materials include hard copy books, electronic code lists, ICD-10-AM electronic appendices, mapping tables, Reference to changes for ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS Thirteenth Edition and the ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS Chronicle.
