National Coding Advice

Date published: 7 August 2022

The National Coding Advice contains the Coding Rules and new edition frequently asked questions (FAQs). These are published to facilitate nationally consistent assignment of ICD-10-AM and ACHI codes in the implemented edition of ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS. National Coding Advice is published quarterly.

The publication of a new Coding Rule, or response to an FAQ, is applicable for separations beginning the following month. For example, those published on 15 December 2025 are applicable for separations from 1 January 2026.

National Coding Advice is also maintained on the Australian Classification Exchange (ACE) website, a searchable database which has a list of current and updated Coding Rules and FAQs.

It is recommended that users refer to the latest online version of the National Coding Advice available on this webpage or ACE, rather than relying on a downloaded copy.

Subscribe to the IHACPA mailing list to receive notification of the next National Coding Advice release.
