National Coding Advice
Date published: 15 September 2022
National Coding Advice (that is, Coding Rules and education frequently asked questions (FAQs)) are published to facilitate nationally consistent assignment of ICD-10-AM and ACHI codes in the implemented edition of ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS. National Coding Advice is generally published quarterly.
The publication of a new Coding Rule (or response to education FAQ) is applicable for separations beginning the following month. For example, those published on 15 March 2022 are applicable for separations from 1 April 2022.
National Coding Advice is maintained on the Australian Classification Exchange (ACE), which has a list of current and updated Coding Rules and FAQ's.

Clinical updates have been developed for clinical coding education and can be used over multiple editions, where appropriate. Previously the clinical updates were located under national coding rules but as they are for education purposes only, and do not contain rules for coding, they are now provided separately.
