National Hospital Cost Data Collection (NHCDC) Public Sector 2022–23

Date published: 28 July 2023

The National Hospital Cost Data Collection (NHCDC) for the public sector, collected through the states and territories, is the primary data collection used to develop the national efficient price.

In 2022-23, IHACPA received NHCDC data from 738 health service providers, an increase of 71 from 2021-22.

This included 44.2 million in-scope patient encounters across Australia, an 8% decrease compared to 2021‑22. The decrease was largely driven by a 14% decline in services relating to COVID-19.

The total national expenditure on public sector hospital activity for 2022-23 was $69.9 billion, a 13% increase from the previous year of $61.9 billion.

The NHCDC Infographic 2022-23 contains a high-level overview of the costs per activity stream, and the NHCDC Public Sector Appendix Tables 2022-23 contains further details from the data collection.

The NHCDC Data Request Specifications contain detailed guidance regarding the submission of NHCDC 2022–23 data.

IHACPA requests jurisdictions provide a Data Quality Statement (DQS) with their annual NHCDC submission. The DQS allows jurisdictions to provide additional information about their data submission, which may be pertinent in processing or interpreting the data.
