Latest updates to IHACPA’s National Benchmarking Portal released

18 December 2025

IHACPA has updated the National Benchmarking Portal (NBP) with an additional year of data for the 2022–23 financial year. This enhancement providers users with deeper insights into hospital cost and activity data.

Key changes

This update includes changes to all dashboards within the NBP, including cost per national weighted activity unit (NWAU), hospital acquired complications and avoidable hospital readmissions.

Further, the cost per NWAU dashboard has been expanded to include admitted mental health data at the phase level, using the Australian mental health care classification.

Support for users

The update will help users:

  • compare activity, cost and efficiency across similar hospitals nationally using the latest available data set
  • explore updated hospital safety and quality data, including hospital acquired complications and avoidable hospital readmission measures
  • use the NWAU calculation to compare and value hospital services, such as emergency department presentations, admitted episodes and non-admitted service events, weighted for clinical complexity
  • measure health service activity as a common unit, against which a national efficient price is paid.
