Date published: 2 August 2022

The National Hospital Cost Data Collection (NHCDC) Public Sector Report and infographic present the results from the NHCDC Public Sector 2019–20.

It is important to note that the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic impacted the accuracy and completeness of public hospital expenditure and activity submitted to the NHCDC Public Sector Report 2019-20. The NHCDC Public Sector Report 2019-20 data may not be consistent with prior years and across states and territories.

These documents account for the hospital costs submitted by jurisdictions for the following activity streams: admitted acute, non-admitted, emergency department, mental health, subacute and non-acute.

The NHCDC Data Request Specifications (DRS) contain detailed guidance regarding the submission of NHCDC 2019-20 data.

This report presents results from the NHCDC 2019-20 Public Sector. It aims to summarise the expenditure within Australia’s public hospitals for the financial year 2019-20 as submitted by jurisdictions to the Independent Health and Aged Care Pricing Authority (IHACPA).

For the NHCDC Public Sector Report 2019-20, IHACPA received data from 553 hospitals nationally. The total hospital expenditure submitted to the NHCDC Public Sector 2019-20 was $54.85 billion, an 8.3 per cent from 2018-19.
