Development of IHACPA Classifications
Date published: 2 October 2026
The governance framework for the Development of IHACPA Classifications establishes a consistent, principles-based approach to the development, maintenance and refinement of IHACPA classifications.
Volume 1 sets out the overarching objectives and principles that apply across all classifications and is supported by companion volumes specific to each classification. Together these volumes strengthen alignment, transparency and coherence across IHACPA classifications.
This volume outlines how we create, update and maintain our classifications to ensure they remain accurate, clinically relevant and suitable for use across the health system. It provides the overarching structure for classification development and sets out a consistent approach aligned with the IHACPA Strategic Plan 2025-30.
Volume 2 builds on Volume 1 and provides detailed guidance for the development of ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS. It outlines the development and approval process, guiding principles and classification resources produced through the classification development cycle. Volume 2 is designed to be read in conjunction with Volume 1.
Volume 3 builds on Volume 1 and provides detailed guidance for the development of AR-DRGs. It outlines the development and approval process, guiding principles and classification resources produced through the classification development cycle. Volume 3 is designed to be read in conjunction with Volume 1.
